The following is a true story about a young man at an Autism Care (UK) Limited home. His surname and other identifying details have been withheld for confidentiality purposes.
"Just eighteen months ago, a young man called John lived in his own flat, had a steady job at a local supermarket and was in a relationship. But when he and his girlfriend broke up, he fell into despair, lost his job and ceased communicating with anyone.
John was placed in an autism-specific residential service. During conversations with his support workers, he talked at length about his future plans. But when asked what he wanted and when, he became very anxious, abusive and uncooperative. He agreed to begin a person-centred plan, which started by developing a circle of support for him.
Developing this support benefited John on many levels. It provided him with good role models, as well as opportunities to expand on his formerly narrow interests and work on building his capability for social conversation and empathy.
John's circles of support got people together in a small discussion group. By using visual aids, we were able to bring his dreams to life, thus making the whole process more concrete. The visual planning developed his lack of executive functioning. John now lives in his own flat and is employed as a kitchen assistant at a local elderly care home."

The following is a true story about a young woman at an Autism Care (UK) Limited home. Her surname and other identifying details have been withheld for confidentiality purposes.
"Our staff developed a person-centred plan for a young woman in our care. However, she found the plan on her wall so stimulating that she became transfixed by it. She spent hours looking at it, and even neglected to eat her breakfast before college because of it. Her support workers realised the plan was distracting her from her daily routine.
The young woman told the support staff that she liked the plan's shapes and colours so much that she just wanted to stare at them all day. They worked with her to choose new colours - red pictures on a yellow background - which were pleasing to her but did not distract her from her routines."
