01.04.08The Heights of experience
One of the region's specialist care providers has opened the doors to its newest facility. Autism Care UK's Rother Heights is an all-new residential centre which provides a caring and supportive environment for individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and learning disabilities.
On 28 February, the first resident - 19-year-old Charlotte - was welcomed by the home, which is located on the outskirts of Sheffield and Rotherham. Charlotte has an associated form of autism called Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). She exhibits forms of anxiety and has difficulties communicating with others.
Autism Care UK has been delivering consistently high standards of care to adults with autism since 1995. Established in Scopwick, Lincolnshire, it caters for the development needs of individuals who are affected by the disorder. In addition to Rother Heights, other facilities are located in South Wales, Lancashire, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire.
Plans for Rother Heights were finalised in 2005, and it was specifically designed with many sensory enhancements that will be of great benefit to the residents.

Registered Care Manager Nick Hamilton has been involved in all stages of the development, along with the experienced staff who have been appointed to work closely with residents. "We deliver individual residential support packages," Nick explains.
"For this reason, it is imperative to employ people with relevant experience who can start working with residents even before they move in. We spent valuable time with Charlotte before she came to Rother Heights. This guaranteed that we had plans in place and could cater for her needs correctly from the moment she arrived. So far the results are encouraging and she is already benefiting from the tailored one-to-one care."
Rother Heights currently employs 11 members of staff to support the first two residents. The number of employees will increase to 80 when the 24-bed facility reaches full occupancy and all staff will be qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level Two or Three.
Autism Care UK is now aiming for further expansion through development of more purpose-built facilities. It has already made a significant contribution to the care of adults with ASD and learning disabilities.
