05.12.07Inspirational conference
Autism is a subject which is becoming better understood. This is as a result of easier access to much-needed information about the condition. A recent conference, organised by a specialist team from Autism Care UK Limited, provided more inspirational ideas about how to enhance the quality of life for adults with autism. Dr Rita Jordan - Professor in Autism Studies at the University of Birmingham - addressed over 160 delegates who attended the one-day event. Luke Beardon - Senior Lecturer in Autism Studies at Sheffield Hallam University - was also one of the guest speakers.
The aim of the conference was to help raise further awareness of the subject and discuss how service providers, friends and family can all play a part in the continued development of adults with autism. The conference also introduced Rother Heights, a new and exciting residential facility in South Yorkshire, which will open its doors in February 2008.
The highlight of the day was an appearance by Chris Mitchell. He was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 20 while studying at university. Chris gave a personal account of his journey through diagnosis and how he has accepted his condition. He also illustrated how he has developed responsibility for his own behaviour by using relaxation techniques to cope with daily life.
Autism Care UK has been delivering consistently high standards of care to adults with autism since 1995. It currently delivers residential care, supported living and outreach services in Gwent, Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Warwickshire.
Rother Heights is located on a 15-acre site in Treeton on the outskirts of Sheffield and Rotherham. This purpose-built centre will consist of four houses, which will each cater for the needs of six people on the autistic spectrum. It will provide specialist therapies and a psychology department.
"We are delighted that the conference was such a success," says Maria Twarowski, Managing Director of Autism Care UK. "The feedback we received was excellent. We have also had a number of enquiries about Rother Heights.
"The new facility has been designed to provide ideal accommodation for somebody who has Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and has left full-time education. As a service provider, we treat every referral separately and cater for individual requirements. This is extremely important when working with people with autism and was one of the key messages during the conference."
